Monday 8 June was a great day for the Global White Lion Protection Trust as we saw the ‘Royal Family’ take their first steps to freedom in their natural distribution range in the Greater Timbavati region.
The release of Mandla, Zihra and their three cubs – brothers Matsieng and Zukhara and sister Nebu – follows on from the first successful reintroduction of the Trust’s founding pride of white lions in 2006.
Before the royal release the pride was darted and collared to ensure the Trust’s scientific team could monitor behaviour in the wild, to analyse hunting strategies and predation rates.
Matsieng and Nebu both have tracking transponders implanted under their skins to ensure their whereabouts can be tracked too.
