The Global White Lion Protection Trust

The Global White Lion Protection Trust (WLT) is a not-for-profit conservation and community development organisation. White lions are found in one specific area in the world: the Greater Timbavati region in South Africa, very close to the Zimbabwean and Mozambiquen borders. The WLT is working to re-establish the white lion gene in its natural distribution range in the wild after many years of forced removals and to protect these rare ‘kings of beasts’ in their endemic habitat.

White lions face extinction in the wild

There are approximately 500 white lions alive worldwide, almost all of which are in captivity. They have been hunted to extinction in their natural habitat by trophy hunters and poachers who will pay large sums of money to shoot a white lion for pleasure. Yet the white lion is seen by many, including tribal elders in Africa, as the most sacred animal on the African continent.

Re-establishing the white lions in the wild

With the careful conservation efforts of the WLT, seven white lions now roam free in their natural ancestral home, the Greater Timbavati. But there is still much work to be done to ensure the survival of these mythical and beautiful creatures.
